A Midsummer Night's Dream

"The course of true love never did run smooth"

This concept began as a joke in response to having gone through an incredibly stressful project that left this play with a bitter taste in my mouth. I had decided that I did not like this play and there wasn't any way that I could imagine that anyone could make it interesting. Ironically, I decided that I would then take up the gauntlet thrown down myself mentally and come up with such a concept that would make A Midsummer Night's Dream "interesting". Then it hit me. David Bowie. Labyrinth. Jim Henson. I wanted something that was inspired by these and yet still stood on its own.

Eventually I decided on Elizabethan silhouettes with 80s inspired fabric, makeup, and hair. Fairies would be a mix of human and puppet. Puck's magic would use some puppetry as well as good old fashioned costume magic. The four human lovers would come into this magic forest from the real world in their "modern" 80s attire.
